Berkhamsted Castle – one of the most important, powerful and important first medieval buildings in the UK. Today a massive strengthening of Berkhamsted, unfortunately, is only surviving part of the defensive walls and the ruins of the palace.
Frithsden Vineyard is a boutique English vineyard and winery set in the foothills of the Chilterns. We are situated a few miles north of Berkhamsted, near the beautiful Ashridge Estate. The vineyard was originally planted in 1971, by the previous owners, Peter and Ann Latchford. They enjoyed great success until the vines were grubbed up in 2001. Simon and Natalie Tooley discovered the site in 2005 and replanted it the following year. We have planted about 6000 vines at the vineyard. The varieties are Solaris, Rondo, and Phoenix. These vines are specially developed in Northern Europe to thrive in our cooler climate. Our wine is grown, pressed and bottled on site and sold in our vineyard shop.
Note: all photos, with a few exceptions, were taken during our previous trips.
