The Patriarchal Stavropegic Monastery of St John the Baptist is a monastic community for both men and women, directly under the Ecumenical Patriarchate. It is located in Tolleshunt Knights, near Maldon, Essex, in England, and is the oldest Orthodox religious community in the UK.
The religious community was founded in 1958 by Elder Sophrony, under the jurisdiction of Metropolitan Anthony, Metropolitan of Sourozh and ruling Russian bishop in England, with six monastics from a number of nations; soon after, in 1965, the Monastery moved under the direct jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
Currently, there are just under 40 monastics in the community, the majority of whom are nuns, with a smaller number of monks;
The John Wilkin Collection is a great place to trace the history of Wilkin & Sons and Tiptree preserves, find out more about village life in Essex, and of course to find out all about jam-making. True, it isn’t the world’s largest museum, but then neither is Tiptree the world’s largest village. Actually, we take that back, it IS Britain’s largest village!
The tea room serves a range of cooked lunches, sandwiches, hot and cold snacks, and home-baked cakes. Try the special: ‘Tiptree’ Strawberry Conserve with home-made scones and fresh cream, served with the ‘Tiptree’ tea of your choice. Almost-forgotten delights. When did you last have a simple jam sandwich? Remember how good it was? If you’d like us to make one for you, just ask; and if you don’t like pips, that’s fine we have raspberry seedless conserve and other preserves without pips.
A visit to Colchester Castle is better than ever before with interactive displays and star exhibits, like the Colchester Vase and Fenwick Treasure.
Visit the museum to have a go at building a Norman archway, excavating a Roman doctor’s grave or steering a chariot. Be wowed as a large scale ‘son et lumière’ projection transforms the east wall with light and sound.
